In Hebrew, it is pronounced as Nuach, with a hard, throaty ch. Genesis 5:28 tells us that it means, “This one will bring us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands, from the ground which YHWH has cursed.” Before the flood cleansed the world, hardship defined life, and the people groaned under it just like the Israelites groaned under the Egyptians' oppression.
A related word, Nachah, is translated as guide/ lead in Genesis 13:21. “YHWH went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them on the way. (Genesis 32:34). The broader meaning is ‘to lead to a rest’. As when ADONAI led the Israelites to a blessed land flowing with milk and honey.
AND NOW.
Under satan’s oppression, mankind groans for relief, release, and fulfilment. But Yeshua is the Messiah who leads us to His eternal rest. He says,” Come to me, all you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” His rest releases us from satan’s shackles, burdens, worries, deception, and lies to a place of His presence, shalom, peace, provision, and protection. But the choice is yours. Choose Yeshua the Messiah, and you will find rest in HIM.
